Hot Water Extraction

Pressurized hot water extraction (PHWE) is a better method for recovering natural organic compounds from solid matrices due to economic, environmental and other constraints, .PHWE is emerging as an alternative and is recently under intensive study. Pressurized hot water refers to compressed hot water maintained at a pressure above its saturation pressure. That is, the hot water is in liquid phase. Temperature and pressure conditions could vary from 100oC to 374oC and 1bar to 219 bar. However, the PHWE process is usually carried out in the range of temperature between 100 and 180oC above the corresponding saturation pressures of 2 bar to 30 bar respectively so that the liquid phase is maintained.
PHWE, which is actually a form of pressurized liquid extraction (PLE), was first introduced in 1994. Other terms for PHWE include subcritical water extraction, superheated water extraction, extraction using hot compressed water, extraction with water at elevated temperatures and pressures, and high temperature water extraction. The major advantages of PHWE include a relatively low operating pressure of operation and environmental friendliness of water. Furthermore, the solvating properties of water can be easily altered through a minor change in temperature and pressure.
PHWE is applied to extraction from plant materials and food. The technique is also used for the extraction of essential oils from plant materials. The principle of PHWE is different from that of steam distillation in which steam-volatile substances are collected from condensed vapor phase. When steam passes through the sample, it carries the compounds which are soluble in it. Enormous heat is required to generate steam because latent heat of vaporization of water is very high. In the PHWE process, compounds are extracted in the liquid phase and so the latent heat is not needed. Therefore, less energy is needed as compared to steam distillation
